In winter, we almost expect our skin to be dry, bumpy, and generally irritated from the harsh weather. But when summer rolls in, the skin doesn’t always magically transform into a dolphin-like glow. (We wish!) Sometimes it just takes a little preparation to get smooth, summery skin. “In the summer months, many of us spend more time outdoors in hot summer weather,” says Dr. Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, certified dermatologist and founder of Entière Dermatology. “This means more exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, heat and infrared from the sun, and pool and sea water.”
This can be a recipe for major irritation, including conditions like ingrown hairs or keratosis pilaris – colloquially known as “chicken skin”. But according to Dr. Corey L. Hartman, founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, AL, there are a few simple steps you can take before you even shop: “First, avoid using hot water for bathing or showering than hot water and steam prolonged use can damage the lipid barrier in your skin and make it harder to retain moisture, ”he says.

This is doubly true in cold months, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe for warmer climates. And in addition to checking your soaps and detergents for ingredients that can increase irritation – alcohol, strong fragrances, and antibacterial detergents can make dryness worse, Hartman says – check your closet as well. “Natural fibers such as silk and cotton let your skin breathe and protect it from chafing,” says Dr. Hartman. “When washing your clothes, look for detergents that are fragrance-free and dye-free – these can irritate your skin. Fabric softeners can also cause problems with dry skin. ”
Still, a few simple changes to your bathing and personal care regimen can make all the difference. Ahead, 19 products that dermatologists, estheticians, and even an acupuncturist recommend for baby-soft skin.
Glytone KP kit
“Refresh dry skin and minimize bumps with this two-step treatment for keratosis pilaris,” says Dr. Hartman. “Intense amounts of ‘free’ glycolic acid help renew rough, dry skin and minimize red bumps. With continued use of the Glytone body lotion and the cleanser, unevenness and redness are noticeably reduced and the skin becomes smoother and more even. ”
CeraVe SA cream
“This was developed to improve the texture of the skin and make very dry skin softer,” says Dr. Hartman. “Formulated with salicylic acid, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, this fragrance-free cream for rough skin helps improve skin texture by exfoliating, hydrating and soothing your skin while restoring its natural barrier with three essential ceramides.”
iS Clinical Body Complex
“The Body Complex is an intensely moisturizing formulation that provides the skin with essential vitamins, soothing botanicals and powerful antioxidants. “Gentle cleansers cleanse the skin without drying it out, and Olay Body Wash with B3 is a great option,” says Dr. Elyse Love, a certified dermatologist practicing in New York City.
Origins ginger body scrub
“If your skin feels a little dull, this body scrub will brighten your day,” says Demirovic. “It also doubles as a mini mani / pedicure when you scrub your hands and feet. Just use it once a week as our bodies generally do a good job of shedding skin. ”
Skinceuticals body firming concentrate
“This coolant inflates again and supports the structure of the skin, which leads to a smooth, dense surface,” says Dr. Hartman. It’s ideal for sagging skin where gravity takes its toll, such as the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, knees and upper arms. ”
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intensive Hydration
“I love First Aid Beauty because of its gentle formulations,” says Demirovic. “As a final step in personal care, lather up the moisturizer (I tend to do this with wet hands to help absorption) and usually mix it with SPF.”

“The perfect way to give your skin a real glow is with this body oil,” says Demirovic. “It will make your skin feel softer and smoother without making you greasy as it absorbs quickly.”

Alastin Transform body treatment with TriHex technology
“This award-winning cream helps reduce the appearance of creepy skin anywhere on the body, including arms, hands and knees,” says Dr. Hartman. “It hydrates from the inside out with herbal ingredients that support the production of hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans.”

Luxcey Emma Ultra Moisturizing Body Balm
“I love this deeply nourishing body balm, which is great to apply after a day of too much sun and is made with many sustainably harvested and organic ingredients,” says DiLibero. “It was the first product in this line, a Canadian company founded by women, inspired by the beauty rituals of women from the founder’s ancestral village in Cameroon.”
Glytone peeling shower gel
“For a body peeling, Glytone’s Exfoliating Body Wash gently cleanses and softens dead skin cells with 8.8% glycolic acid,” says Dr. Levin. “It’s also safe for pregnancy.”
Isdin Uradin Lotion 10
“For body moisturizers, Uradin by Isdin is one of my favorite light moisturizers with 10% urea that not only moisturizes but also gently exfoliates without feeling heavy or greasy during the summer months,” says Dr. Levin.

It’s also available in fun fragrances for the warmer months. ”
