Much like organizing desks, kitchens, and garages, completing a closet organization project can be overwhelming, and it is difficult for many people to find affordable ways to get it done.
If you are a person who is easily overwhelmed, try breaking the task down into smaller tasks; For example, you can set aside a day to sort pants and shirts, another day for dresses and skirts, and another day for coats and shoes. Weed out clothing that is damaged, no longer fits, or has simply gone out of style, and donate it or take it to a garbage disposal. Once you know what items your pared-back wardrobe is made up of, you can find storage solutions that suit your new needs.
To help you with these storage solutions, we enlisted the help of home organization expert Nonnahs Driskill, founding organizer of Get Organized Schon !, and Alex Rush, a professional organizer whose Spruce NYC company specializes in small spaces. We asked these experts to help us select 20 of the absolute best closet organizers, all under $ 20.
Amazon Basics non-slip slim hangers, pack of 30
The best upgrade I’ve ever made to my own closet was buying a set of slim hangers. It took me longer than it should have been to become a convert, but now I’ll never go back to bulkier plastic hangers. Both the hook and shoulders of slim hangers are slimmer than standard hangers so they really maximize closet space. And unlike plastic hangers, most slim hangers are covered with a non-slip velvet so that delicate items like silk blouses stay in place instead of slipping off the hanger and getting wrinkled – or worse, with your shoes on the closet floor land.
Whitmor padded coat hangers, pack of 6
Slim hangers are the right choice for most clothes, but investing in a small set of custom hangers is also a good idea. Padded clothes hangers are perfect for hanging delicate fabrics like cashmere or fine cotton to prevent damage during storage. Similar to these velvet hangers, padded hangers are also perfect for fabrics that tend to slip off plastic hangers.

Chrome wallet hangers, pack of 6
There are specialized hangers of all types, but Rush especially loves a wallet hanger that is designed to fit on a standard clothes rail. “I love an S-hook for hanging handbags so they can breathe and get the prime real estate they deserve,” she says. “They are also suitable for hanging up travel bags, travel bags, boots, scarves – whatever!”
mDesign split wallet organizer made of plastic
Another divider-style organizer that is great for a closet shelf is this wallet and clutch holder. It has compartments for three small purses, clutches or wallets and is available in either light pink, white or clear plastic.
Keetdy over-the-door hat organizer for baseball caps
If your accessories collection is centered around ball caps rather than clutches, this over-the-door organizer will help keep your hats in one place where you can see them all. It picks up on design elements of the old closet standard, the multi-pocket shoe holder, and offers space for 24 baseball-style caps as well as beanies, bandanas and other unstructured hats.
MarleyLifeDesign heavy-duty hook
Driskill loves a heavy-duty hook to perform all kinds of functions in a closet, from hanging a robe, a handbag, tomorrow’s outfit or, as she puts it, “clinking” clothes – that’s clean but dirty.
Rush also recommends using hooks in a closet: “Get every inch of wall and vertical space you can!” “they are pretty”.
Command Medium self-adhesive wire hooks, 2-pack
The self-adhesive Command Hook, which has a pull-out tab that allows you to remove it without damaging the wall, is another style that Driskill recommends for use in a closet. These hooks are perfect for hanging up smaller items such as necklaces, narrow belts or ball caps.
Karcy Retractable Cabinet Pull-Out Bar
Cupid servants are such a handy tool that many people don’t even know exists in this world. These are thin rods that can be extended to hang up clothes for steaming, to air them out after wearing them or just to prepare an outfit for the next day. Installation is simple – just a few screws – and the pole retracts when not in use.
Whitmor double closet rod
About this cabinet extension rod, Driskill simply says, “It’ll double your hanging space.” It hangs over any standard closet rod and requires no installation other than literally hanging on the rod like a coat hanger.
Lynk Vela shelf dividers, pack of 2
If your closet comes with a long shelf above the rail, you probably know that the huge storage space can quickly turn into a mess. Shelf dividers create storage compartments where you can stack things like folded sweaters or t-shirts without the piles falling over and creating a mess. The dividers are also great for organizing handbags and other accessories by keeping them upright and easily accessible.
Hmdivor clear acrylic shelf dividers, pack of 4
“These shelf dividers are great for keeping the things you don’t hang neat and tidy,” because the clear acrylic style creates a boutique look, says Rush. “Folding and stacking things like bulky sweaters and jeans creates a lot of hanging space and still makes them easily accessible.” She also loves them for organizing handbags and clutches.
Whitmor cabinet organizer with 5 sections
Driskill chose this set of fabric shelves because they are so incredibly versatile. “Use it in any closet to organize shoes, sweaters, stuffed animals, tools, exercise equipment, etc.!” She says. The metal frame gives structure and the fabric construction allows some flexibility in storing oddly shaped objects.
Room Essentials trolley with 3 drawers
This lightweight plastic three-drawer cabinet is super versatile, especially if the drawer space in your home is limited. Use it to store smaller items of clothing like socks, underwear, and PJs, or to organize small accessories like belts, scarves, hats, gloves, etc. The see-through drawers let you see what’s inside so your belongings aren’t forgotten while they’re in storage.
Weiai floating shelves made of clear acrylic, 3-pack
Rush suggests using all of the available vertical space in a closet and chose these floating shelves because “they’re perfect for storing accessories like belts (rolled up like a snake) and sunglasses. I think it’s great that they’re made of acrylic so that you can see every item and are therefore more likely to be worn and used. ”
Umbra Skinny slim and stylish little trash can, 2-pack
You’ve probably never thought of putting a trash can in a closet, but this sleek trash can can be a great organizer. Use it to stash oddly shaped items that might otherwise end up on the floor of the closet or in a hard-to-reach back corner, like exercise mats, umbrellas, or wrapping paper rolls so you can find them easily and grab them when you need them.

2-tier shoe rack
Driskill chose this shoe rack because “this design allows for a lot of air circulation,” she says. She suggests buying two of these and placing them next to each other to create plenty of space for all of your shoes; Each shelf holds six pairs of adult-sized shoes, and if you count the floor space under the lower shelf, which is the right size for flat models like flip-flops, sandals, or ballet flats, you have room for three more pairs.
Fix Find pool noodles, pack of 5
Driskill provided this absolutely ingenious – and very budget-friendly – solution to the problem of tall boots falling all over the place when kept upright in a closet: use pool noodles! She explains that pool noodles “can be cut to fit and stored in your boots to keep their shape”. Brilliant!

Sterilite sorting basket
“If you don’t have room for a laundry basket in the bathroom,” says Driskill, “keep this slim model in the closet.” if there is a laundry basket in the laundry room, always have another basket to collect the endless dirt. ”
DampRid hanging pockets, pack of 3
While it’s not technically an organizing solution, people who choose to keep a basket in the closet also want to invest in a moisture and odor absorbing product to prevent the development of musty smells. DampRid is also great for use in damp closets, where mold and mildew can develop and leave an unpleasant odor on your belongings.
