“I honestly feel pretty passionate about this topic,” said Allyson Spungin, a certified personal trainer, nutrition coach, and nationally qualified NPC competitor, of thigh chafing.
Passionate feelings about thigh chafing? Yup! And Spungin isn’t alone: Style influencer and body acceptance advocate Katie Sturino is so passionate about thigh chafing that she created a product, Megababe Thigh Rescue, specifically designed to address this painful problem.
“I wanted something that felt solemn and fun – there really isn’t anything like it on the market,” she says. “There are other anti-chafing sticks out there, but they’re all designed for men, for athletes. This is the common thread through our entire business, strengthens women and destigmatizes things like sweat or chafing. ”
But what exactly is thigh chafing and what can you do about it?
“Chafing of the thighs is essentially a type of irritant contact dermatitis that is made worse by moisture and skin-to-skin contact,” says dermatologist Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky. “Continuous rubbing in combination with moisture on the skin leads to small tears and shearing of the top layers of the skin, which leads to skin damage.”
Care Clark, a nurse and skincare specialist who shares tips on Instagram and TikTok, explains that thigh chafing is particularly common because “the skin along the thighs is generally thinner and more sensitive, and therefore much more prone to irritation.”
Since chafing your thighs is essentially a rash, there are a number of over-the-counter ointments and lotions that will help reduce redness and painful irritation.
Smiles drawing ointment
Casey Johnston, vice editor-in-chief and author of the fitness advisor column “Ask a Swole Woman,” recommends a chafing product called Smile’s Drawing Salve that she believes “relieves pain and isn’t sticky – although it can stain. Clothes and have a smell, so handle them carefully. ”
Vaseline Vaseline, pack of 3 & Neosporin pain relieving ointment
In a pinch, Johnston also uses the pain relieving formula of Vaseline or Neosporin to treat chafed areas. Clark says that “any scented lotions or balms with fragrances” should also be avoided when treating chafing.
Aquaphor Healing Ointment & Desitin Diaper Rash Cream
Zubritsky, a dermatologist who also provides skin care advice on Instagram and TikTok, says, “I recommend zinc oxide or petroleum-based products to help the affected skin heal. I personally like Vaseline or Aquaphor or Desitin for a zinc product. ”
She says to stay away from DIY home remedies, “especially food products, to combat chafing. I especially don’t recommend coconut oil or baking powder / soda. ”
Wearing cycling shorts under dresses and skirts where your thighs can rub against each other is an obvious way to avoid chafing, and Johnston has tips on how to find the best type for you.
“If you don’t want to hide them under a dress or something, it’s probably better to choose the long inside leg to avoid riding up,” she says. “Sometimes they can be found in activewear, even though you want to make sure they don’t have the built-in padding of real cycling shorts.”
Johnston highly commends Lululemon and Aerie for offering full, advanced sizing, and these two below are her favorites. Here you can find more of our most popular bike shorts.
Lululemon Align Short 8-inch
We’ve thought a long time about how much we love Lululemon, and we’re no less excited about these cycling shorts. As soft as butter and the perfect length for wearing under skirts and dresses that don’t prevent chafing or slide up all day long.
Offline Real Me Crossover 7 inch bike shorts
Another of Johnston’s favorites is the stylish waistband and muted colors. They would look cute even if just worn with an oversized t-shirt.
Megababe thigh rescue
For her part, Sturino developed their thigh scrubbing balm to fill a niche in the market that people had previously filled with some sort of hack, using everything from solid deodorant to lubricant to help prevent the painful irritation.
“People think they can live without this product because they are alone with it for so long,” she says. “They say, ‘Eh, I’ll just do this, I’ll just do that.’ And I’m like, no you don’t get it! It’s a game changer. ”
We tried Thigh Rescue ourselves and we can testify to its life changing power that really helps you walk for hours without feeling like sandpaper is stuck between your thighs. Sure, sometimes you’ll have to reapply if it’s particularly hot and sticky outside, but it’s small enough to take in your pocket as well.
Body Glide Original anti-chafing balm
Johnston and Spungin, who are athletes, like to use products designed to combat chafing while exercising. “The first choice is a custom-made product called Body Glide, which we didn’t have in the past,” says Johnston of the popular anti-chafing balm.
Cerave moisturizing lotion
Clark says when it comes to avoiding chafing on your thighs, I recommend keeping your legs as moist and dry as possible. Her favorite products include Cerave Moisturizing Lotion, Amlactin Daily Moisturizing Lotion, and Aquaphor.
Burt’s Bees Dust Powder & Megababe Body Dust
To prevent sweat, which can make chafing worse, Clark likes powders like Burt’s Bees Dusting Powder and Sturino’s Megababe Body Dust.
Zubritsky also recommends using an antifungal powder called Zeasorb to keep the groin area clean and dry and to help prevent fungal infections. “I also like Chamois Butt’r Original Anti-Chafe Cream to reduce friction in the area,” she says.
