Dutch wildcard Tim van Rijthoven capped a dream run at the Libema Open by beating top seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-1 in the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch on Sunday.
Van Rijthoven, ranked at No. 205 in the world, had never won a main draw match at an ATP Tour event up until this week, knocking out third-seeded Taylor Fritz and second-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime before defeating Medvedev in 65 Minutes his virgin secured title.
25-year-old Van Rijthoven managed to beat Medvedev four times and when the Russian hit the net with his point win he sank to the pitch as the home crowd cheered the first Dutch champions on home soil in 19 years.
“Congratulations Tim, great week. First time in an ATP tournament (finals) and immediately you destroy world number two in straight sets,” Medvedev said after receiving the second-place trophy.
“I don’t know how it feels, so it must be a good feeling!”
US Open champion Medvedev becomes world number one on Monday.
