The European Union’s Board of Directors has recommended that the block lift Covid-19 restrictions on non-essential travel from 14 countries, including the US.
In a statement on Friday, the European Council called for member states to “gradually lift travel restrictions at external borders” for residents of the following third countries:
- New Zealand
- Republic of North Macedonia
- South Korea
- United States of America
- China, subject to mutual confirmation
Travel restrictions are also to be gradually lifted for the special administrative regions of China, Hong Kong and Macau. The reciprocity condition for these special administrative regions has been lifted, she added.
The decision was based on criteria that included the “epidemiological situation and general response to COVID-19, as well as the reliability of the information and data sources available”. Reciprocity should also be taken into account on a case-by-case basis.
The list should be reviewed every two weeks.
