‘Good news’: Former AFN national chief reacts to news of papal visit

Former First Nations Assembly national chief Phil Fontaine calls the details of Pope Francis’ upcoming trip to Canada “good news”.

“I think it’s wonderful news that Pope Francis will fulfill the promise he made to delegates at the general audience in Rome,” Fontaine told CTV News Channel.

The Vatican reconfirmed Thursday that the pope will visit Canada next month and that the visit will include a trip to the site of a former boarding school in Alberta to meet with survivors.

Fontaine said he expects the pope to expand on his initial apology for the boarding school system, which was issued during visits by indigenous delegations to the Vatican in April and which focused more on individual behavior than the church as an institution.

“We understood when he apologized during the general audience that he was coming to Canada to apologize on Canadian soil in one of our First Nations communities and he would extend the apology,” Fontaine said.
