The St. Tammany Ward has issued an executive order declaring a ward-wide curfew effective noon today (1 p.m. ET) including all wards, said ward president Michael Cooper.
The curfew will remain in place until the threat of Hurricane Ida is over, said the mayor.
While the curfew is in place, the only vehicles allowed on the streets within the community that are necessary for life-threatening emergencies and that are operated by first responders and utilities, Cooper said.
Hurricane Ida is expected to land shortly as the community prepares for 10 inches or more of rain and the possibility of tornadoes. Local roads are expected to be flooded and impassable due to floods, fallen trees and fallen power lines, Cooper said.
The community is planning widespread power outages, with recent reports of over 7,500 power outages, Cooper said.
