According to reports from two courtroom pool reporters, the jury appears to be “relatively engaged” in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin and to the testimony of forensic pathologist Dr. Listening to Lindsey Thomas on Friday morning.
When Thomas told the court that she believed “asphyxiation or low oxygen levels” was the “main mechanism” of George Floyd’s death, “almost all of the jurors were seen writing this down.”
During Thomas’ testimony Friday morning, a package containing photos of Floyd’s autopsy was distributed to jurors, pool reporters and court onlookers.
The packages contained “close-ups of the face, shoulders and hands. His body is brightly lit – almost in portrait style. Externally, the photos are not clinical. “
A pool reporter observed all of the judges looking through the photos and “some can be seen looking at all of the pictures”.
The Floyd family representative “had no obvious emotional reaction” to the package containing the autopsy photos, but a pool reporter noted, “He stared at the first picture for a long time before flipping through the remaining pictures.”
A pool report included the following descriptions of the autopsy photos presented to judges:
“Exhibit 185 is a close-up of Floyd, a white tube sticking out of his mouth after he was trying to breathe. His face is scraped over the left eyebrow and onto the left cheek. All jurors look at the photos at this point, some scroll ahead and look at all the pictures. “
“Exhibit 235 is a close-up of the scrapes on the left side of Floyd’s face taken from the side.”
“Exhibit 188 is a photo of Floyd’s left shoulder with a large abrasion that Thomas says the jury is evidence of Floyd trying to push himself up.”
“Exhibit 187 is a photo of Floyd’s right shoulder showing some scratches but not as large as the scuffing on Floyd’s left shoulder.”
“Appendix 189 is a photo of Floyd’s left hand, which is surrounded by a large red marker. Thomas testifies that this is from the handcuff. The judges look at the photos as she speaks. “
“Exhibit 190 is a photo of Floyd’s right hand showing a similar mark from a handcuff. Thomas points out scratches on his knuckles and fingers, which she says the jury came when he reached for the patrol car and “pushed his body back into a position where he can breathe.”
Both pool reporters noted that, for the first time during the trial, the seat reserved for a representative of the Derek Chauvin family will be occupied by a woman today. The MPs had previously removed the seat from the courtroom as no representative of the Chauvin family had attended the trial up to that point.
Pool reporters have not yet been able to identify the Floyd family representative in court on Friday. The reports indicate that an MP is sitting between the representatives of the Floyd family and Chauvin. The two don’t look at each other.
