India has reported the highest number of daily coronavirus cases in the world for the second year in a row as the country grapples with a deepening crisis.
332,730 new cases were registered on Friday, bringing the total to more than 16 million cases in India. This emerges from a CNN balance sheet by the Indian Ministry of Health. The country added over 1 million cases in four days.
India also reported the highest death toll in a day since the pandemic began, with 2,263 deaths on Friday.
In the capital New Delhi, at least six private hospitals ran out of oxygen on Thursday, Delhi’s Deputy Prime Minister Manish Sisodia said in a letter to the unions’ health ministers.
Even after the central government delivered 480 tons of oxygen to Delhi on Wednesday, Delhi’s attorney informed the city’s Supreme Court on Thursday that supplies had not yet reached the capital.
The Home Office issued an order calling on states not to restrict the movement of medical oxygen. The Supreme Court also called for the creation of a special corridor for the movement of oxygen.
As of Friday morning, only 25 beds were available in the intensive care unit in the capital, a dashboard from the Delhi government showed.
Later today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair high-level meetings to review the Covid-19 situation in the country.
