Indigenous slasher movie filmed in Canada

Canada’s largest territory is the setting for an indigenous alien movie.

The film, titled Slash/Back, stars Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Vincent-Wolfe, Nalajoss Ellsworth and Chelsea Prusky, four Inuk teenagers who discover an alien invasion in their hometown of Pangnirtung, Nunavut.

Located on Baffin Island, Pangnirtung is a remote fly-in community.

The film was shot in the village and accompanies the young women in what they consider to be a typical summer in the Arctic. Instead, the teenagers stumble upon an alien and take it upon themselves to save the sleepy town.

When the young women track down more aliens, it’s up to them to stop them with makeshift weapons and their knowledge of the hunt.

Director Nylan Innuksuk is the founder of Mixtape VR and is best known as the co-creator of Marvel Comics’ “Snowguard,” which tells the story of an Inuk teenager who discovers she has powers.

Slash/Back premiered on March 14 at SXSW, a Texas film/TV and music conference focused on interactive arts.
