SEOUL: North Korea fired multiple artillery shells between 8:07 a.m. and 11:03 a.m. local time on Sunday (June 12), the South Korean military said, in another show of force a day after leader Kim Jong Un pledged to increase military might to strengthen the reclusive nation.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff gave no further details but added they decided to issue a statement late in the evening because the shots were traditional, relatively short-range and low-altitude.
The firing of artillery shells comes as Kim unveiled targets to bolster the country’s military might and defense research to protect North Korea’s sovereign rights on Saturday as it concluded the plenary session of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPF) Central Committee held last week.
