‘They Are Gone’: Police Seek Clues in Kidnapping of Baby, Parents and Uncle

The police in central California said they were investigating the kidnapping of an 8-month-old baby, her father, her mother and an uncle, who were taken from a business against their will on Monday.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday night that they did not know the motive for the kidnapping and that they believed that the suspect was armed and dangerous.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the 8-month-old, Aroohi Dheri; her mother, Jasleen Kaur, 27; her father, Jasdeep Singh, 36; and the baby’s uncle, Amandeep Singh, 39, were kidnapped from a business in South Merced, about 100 miles southeast of Sacramento.

“So far we have no idea why the kidnapping, we have no motivation behind it, we just know they are gone,” Sheriff Vernon Warnke, of Merced County, said in a video that his office released on Monday.

Sheriff Warnke said that as of Monday night, the police had not received any ransom demands or other contact from the person or people responsible for the kidnapping.

“We’ve got evidence to indicate that the individuals involved in this destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover the tracks,” the sheriff said.

The sheriff said that detectives were canvassing the county for more information and that they were using aircraft to search for evidence.

The person sought in the kidnapping was a “light-complected male with a shaved head,” who was last seen wearing a hoodie, the sheriff’s office said in a statement that included two photos of the man, who was not named.

The police appealed to the public to contact them by phone or email if they knew who the kidnapper was or if they had seen the family.
