WEISSENHAUS, Germany: Ukraine on Friday (May 13) called on the G7 group of rich nations to seize Russian assets and hand them over to help rebuild after months of war, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
Kuleba said he made the request while addressing a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in northern Germany. “We are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars. Russia has to pay,” Kuleba told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting.
He also called on the European Union to push through plans for broader sanctions against Russia, including an oil embargo, and said he hopes Hungary will drop opposition to the scheme.
“We do not interfere in their discussion, but it is a critical moment when we will see whether the unity of the EU will remain or whether it will be broken,” he said.
G7 foreign ministers at the meeting backed more aid and arms for Kyiv, in what Germany called a “strong show of unity” to deepen Russia’s global isolation.
Kuleba said arms supplies to the country had greatly improved, but more were needed to ensure Kyiv could continue to hold its own against Moscow, notably multiple missile launch systems.
He accused Russia of blocking Ukrainian agricultural exports and said the G7 had discussed how to lift the blockade.
The Kremlin is calling its February 24 invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation” to demilitarize a neighbor who threatens its security.
Ukraine says it poses no threat to Russia and the deaths of thousands of civilians and the destruction of cities and towns show Russia is waging a war of aggression.
