The panel convened by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance could also decide to indict executives of the Trump organization or the company itself if criminal charges are brought up, the Post reported.
The grand jury will sit three days a week for six months, according to the newspaper, and during that time will likely hear matters beyond the Trump Organization investigation.
CNN has asked the Trump Organization for a comment. Trump previously called the prosecutor’s investigation a “witch hunt”.
Manhattan prosecutors declined to comment when it was reached by CNN on Tuesday.
Messages from the panel signal that Vance’s team of prosecutors who have been investigating the Trump organization for more than two years may be nearing the end of their investigation. Prosecutors are investigating whether the Trump organization has misled lenders and insurance companies about the value of real estate and paid reasonable taxes.
Prosecutors are searching millions of pages of documents, including Trump’s tax returns received in February after the US Supreme Court blocked Trump’s attempt to stop a subpoena at his long-standing accounting firm.
The investigation includes Trump Tower, the family estate known as Seven Springs, the Chicago Hotel and Condo Tower, and the hush money payments made to silence Stormy Daniels, the adult movie star who claims to be having an affair with Trump. Trump has denied the matter.
The attorney general’s investigation into the Trump organization, which has been ongoing since 2019, will also continue as a civil investigation. However, the firm recently briefed Trump Organization officials on the criminal component.
“We have informed the Trump organization that our investigations into the organization are no longer of a purely civil nature. We are now investigating the Trump organization in a criminal capacity together with the Manhattan Public Prosecutor,” James’ spokesman Fabien Levy told CNN. “We have no additional comment.”
This is a game changing story and will be updated.
